How to Pose for your Headshot

*During your shoot, you’ll be guided along the way. The tips below help you have an idea of things to think about beforehand.

Your posture plays a big role in nailing the “perfect” photo. Hold your back straight and pull your shoulders down and back.
• A 3/4 body angle is often the most flattering.
• To avoid a double chin (a very natural occurrence for most people), accentuate your jaw slightly by elongating your neck -as naturally as possible.
• Smiling for the camera is always up to you. Smiling with your eyes, adds warmth and approachability. To do this - think about a happy memory and very slightly squint your eyes.

Headshot Preparation Tips

Choose the Right Outfit

  • Dress Professionally: Select clothing that aligns with your industry and company culture. A classic, polished look works well.

  • Avoid Bold Patterns: Opt for solid colors or subtle patterns to avoid distractions.

  • Layering Works: Blazers, jackets, or cardigans add structure and dimension to your look.

  • Complement Your Skin Tone: Jewel tones, muted shades, and neutrals (like navy, gray, and beige) are flattering and often photograph well.

Hair, Makeup, etc.

  • Hair: Consider a trim if needed and style your hair in a way that feels natural for you.

  • Makeup: Aim for a natural look that enhances features without being too heavy.

  • Shaving and Skin Care: Ensure facial hair is neatly groomed, and hydrate skin well before the shoot. Avoid trying new skincare products that could irritate your skin close to the shoot day.

Get a Good Night’s Rest

  • Rest can help you look more refreshed and reduce under-eye puffiness, helping you look your best.

Bring Essential Items

  • Bring a comb, powder for shine control, and any makeup essentials for touch-ups if needed. Lip balm and water can also help keep your lips hydrated and refreshed.

Think About Expression

  • Consider the expression you want to convey. A friendly, approachable smile or a neutral, confident look both work well. Practice expressions in the mirror if it helps you feel prepared!

Body Language and Posture

  • Good posture (relaxed shoulders, standing or sitting tall) is key. If in doubt, a slight lean toward the camera can make the shot more engaging.

Coordinate with Background and Company Standards

  • If possible, learn about the shoot background and any company preferences. This will help in choosing the best color and style for your outfit.
